Double Disc Pulp Refiner Control for Fiber Strength Development

Refining changes fiber properties after pulping and screening. A Double Disc Pulp Refiner is used to improve fiber bonding, flexibility, fibrillation, and sheet strength. The machine works by passing pulp between rotating and stationary refining plates, where controlled mechanical treatment modifies the fiber surface. This step can strongly influence tensile strength, burst strength, drainage, formation, and final paper performance.

Pulp Refining Equipment must be selected according to fiber type and paper grade. Recycled fibers often need careful treatment because they may already be shortened or hornified from previous drying cycles. Virgin chemical pulp may tolerate stronger refining when high bonding strength is required. Mechanical pulp and specialty grades require their own plate patterns and energy targets.

A Low Consistency Refiner is commonly used because it offers stable control in many stock preparation systems. The pulp is diluted enough to flow evenly through the refining zone, while plate gap and load can be adjusted to reach the desired refining effect. Low consistency operation also helps distribute energy more uniformly across the fiber stream.

Refining intensity matters. Too little refining can leave fibers stiff and poorly bonded, causing weak sheet properties. Too much refining can reduce drainage, increase fines, raise energy cost, and create problems on the paper machine. Operators usually track freeness, specific energy, motor load, stock temperature, and paper strength results to find the correct operating point.

Plate selection is another major factor. Bar width, groove depth, cutting angle, and surface pattern determine how fibers are treated. Some plates emphasize cutting, while others emphasize fibrillation and brushing. The correct pattern depends on whether the mill needs strength development, drainage control, or fiber equalization.

Maintenance should include plate wear measurement, bearing inspection, seal checks, and alignment control. Worn plates can consume more power while giving less useful fiber development. Stable mechanical condition makes refining results easier to repeat from shift to shift.

A Double Disc Pulp Refiner is not just a power-consuming machine; it is a quality control tool. When Pulp Refining Equipment and Low Consistency Refiner settings are managed carefully, mills can develop strength efficiently, protect drainage, and produce paper with more consistent performance.

Refining should begin with a clear target. Some grades need high bonding strength, while others need bulk, absorbency, or fast drainage. If the target is not defined, operators may over-refine because strength improves at first, even though drainage and machine speed begin to suffer. The best refining program balances all paper properties, not just one number.

Specific energy is a useful way to compare refining work. It connects power use with pulp flow and consistency, allowing operators to understand how much energy is applied per ton. Tracking specific energy beside freeness and strength data helps reveal whether the refiner is producing useful fiber development or simply consuming power.

Stock temperature should not be ignored. Refining converts energy into heat, and rising temperature can affect drainage, chemical performance, and equipment condition. Sudden temperature changes may indicate plate contact, flow restriction, or unstable consistency. Temperature monitoring is a simple early warning tool.

Plate changes should be documented carefully. A new plate pattern can alter fiber length, fines generation, and drainage even when motor load appears similar. Keeping records of plate hours, grade results, and maintenance observations helps mills build a refining knowledge base instead of relying on trial and error.

When choosing a refiner, mills should send target paper properties along with flow and consistency data. The machine supplier can then recommend plate patterns and motor power based on strength development, drainage, and energy goals. It is also wise to plan for future plate changes, because paper grades may change and the refiner should remain useful beyond the first production recipe.
